A high school principal named Borden (Roy Thinnes from X-Files, 1960s series Invaders) collaborates with a mysterious Dr. Gunbow of the “Behavior Modification Research Institute” on an experimental project using subliminal sound waves to control and change the behavior of the student body. Mind control is a recurring theme in Canadian cinema, often inspired by the real events in Montréal where this film was made.
Frankie and Crash, two DJs from the student radio station (the debut of Lee Tergeson (Oz TV series, 1997) and Skip Lackey (Once Bitten, 1985), remain inadvertently unaffected by the tones being distributed through the intercom system by listening to their own music on headphones in class. Its not long before the two find themselves the leaders of a rebellion against Borden and the BMRI and must save both the future of rock n' roll and the innocent youth at Kingston High.
Invasion of the Mind Benders (1988) was produced by Jack Bravman, an American who moved to Canada in the 1980s and became responsible for the films Zombie Nightmare (1987) and The Carpenter (1988) featuring Wings Hauser. Bravmen hired Genie Joseph to direct and also rewrite the original screenplay, who had recently completed working on the notorious Spookies (1986) film. Mind Benders also features the special effects of Arnold Gargiulo, who worked with Genie on Spookies (1986) and George Romero's Day of the Dead (1985).
To attend this screening in person, please come to the RPL Film Theatre shortly before 7pm Friday November 27 for limited seating.

For more than 50 years, Regina Public Library (RPL) has played a pivotal role in the cultural life of the city of Regina and surrounding areas. In the mid-60s, interest in a permanent venue for film enthusiasts grew into a program at the Library – a co-operative effort between the local Film Council and the National Film Board of Canada. A landmark year for the cultural, multi-cultural and surrounding business communities was 1975, the year the RPL Film Theatre was officially launched.
