Honey Moccasin - Introduced by Shelley Niro

Free Admission | Thursday, January 27, 7:00 PM CST | CANADA | 1998 | 47 min | NR | Directed by Shelley Niro

The first of its kind in Canada made by an Indigenous filmmaker, "Honey Moccasin" is set on the fictional Grand Pine Indian Reservation (aka "Reservation X") and employs a hybrid pastiche of styles that depicts the rivalry between two bars, the Smoking Moccasin and the Inukshuk Cafe, the tale of closeted drag queen/powwow clothing thief Zachery John (illy merasty), and the travails of the crusading investigator/storyteller Honey Moccasin (Tantoo Cardinal).

An irreverent parody of familiar narrative strategies, "Honey Moccasin" forges an oppositional aesthetic via its reappropriation of the conventions of melodrama, performance art, cable access, and a "whodunit" style to investigate notions of authenticity, cultural identity, gender roles, and the articulation of contemporary native North American experiences.

Shelley Niro is a member of the Turtle Clan, Bay of Quinte Mohawk from the Six Nations Reserve. holds a degree from Ontario College of Art and a Master of Fine Art from the University of Western Ontario. Niro has exhibited across Canada has work in collections of the Canada Council Art Bank, Canadian Museum of History, and Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography. Her award-winning films have been screened in festivals worldwide, and she presented work at the 2003 Venice Biennale. Shelley Niro lives in Brantford, Ontario.
